Northern Power 100kW Turbine
Northern Power 100kW Turbine Produces Impressive Results in Ayrshire
Fully operational for just over a year, the 100kW Northern Power direct drive wind turbine installed at Girvan Community Hospital has generated an impressive 18% more power than predicted.
William Mitchell, Director of 3R Energy Solutions, the company now responsible for the operation and maintenance of the turbine at this site, was delighted to share this news with guests at a recent open day hosted jointly with NHS Arran and Ayrshire Estates Department. The Northern Power Systems 100kW wind turbine has produced 226,000 kWh in an average wind speed of just 5.6m/s over the course of the past year and this has resulted in considerable savings for the hospital in reduced electricity bills and income generation from Feed-in Tariffs.
William said, "This is a real good news story for the medium scale wind sector; here is a turbine that has been up and running for more than a year and is performing better than expected. 3R Energy Solutions chose Northern Power Systems as a partner because of the reputation of its flagship wind turbine, the Northern Power 100, as being highly efficient and reliable". William continued, "This success in Girvan has justified our faith in the product and we are confident that as we install further Northern Power 100s throughout the country, our clients will be delighted by not only the impressive power generation of this turbine, but also by its quiet operation and its reliability."
When Girvan Community Hospital opened its doors at the beginning of May 2010, it began looking after the local environment, as well as looking after its patients. The hospital was built with a variety environmentally-friendly features such as a 100kw wind turbine and a 700kW biomass boiler plant which now makes it one of the most innovative green public buildings in Scotland. Ian Hill, Energy Manager for NHS Ayrshire and Arran, said "I am very pleased with the performance of the turbine to date. It sits at the edge of the hospital car park for all to see and is very quiet even in high wind speeds due to the small blades. There have been no complaints about the noise. We have had snagging issues when running the standby generators in the hospital, but with the help of 3R Energy Solutions, we have now managed to correct these issues. As with all projects of this nature it is essential to have a committed maintenance contractor who reacts timeously to all issues with the turbines operation".
