The term ‘biomass’ is used to describe any biological material that originates from a living organism. In its broadest sense it can be used to describe everything from cow dung to dinosaur bones but in terms of energy we use biomass to describe plant or tree based materials such as wood.
Wood fuelled heating systems, also called biomass systems, burn wood pellets, chips or logs to power central heating and hot water boiler systems. Just like a fossil fuel boiler system, they are designed to heat a building using radiators and provide hot water too. These can be log burning boilers, which are stoked by hand, or can run on woodchips or pellets which can be fed automatically by a hopper.
As fuel costs continue to rise, there is no better time to be installing a biomass boiler system.
Renewable Heat Incentive
The Renewable Heat Incentive provides support for eligible renewable heating installations in Scotland, England and Wales, in the form of payment of a tariff for every kWh of renewable heat generated.
In order to fulfil its commitments towards arresting climate change and with a view to reducing dependence on imports of fossil fuels, the Scottish Government through the RHI aims to provide a surge in uptake of renewable heat technologies, so that 11% of heat comes from renewable sources by 2020. The RHI sits alongside the Feed-In Tariff Scheme for wind.
